38 down.... if you count hair

On Easter Sunday I stepped away from my feast and decided I just wasn’t going to keep going. I mean, I typically eat whatever I want and keep going until I am stuffed. I am lucky because I deserve to weigh well over 300 lbs. I have been getting away with being a glutton for a long time. I know a lot of people that are very disciplined in their diet and they still struggle with weight.

Well, a change was still in order. I was getting tired of not being able to run the bases after hitting a ball in the gap. It was convicting on mornings when I would reach down to tie my shoes..... and literally need to come up for air after the first shoe.

A friend of mine, Bill Mercer, told me that I should multiply my weight by seven, and then limit myself to that number of calories each day. So, starting the Monday after Easter, that is what I did. A few weeks into this, I realized I was tired and almost sick from not eating. Bill told me to get some multi-vitamins, so I did. It worked.

The pounds started top drop.... quickly.

The picture on the left is from April 29th, my birthday. The picture on the right is Father’s day, June 17th. These are the “before and after” shots.

I sold all my “fat pants” on eBay... as well as my “fat jeans”. People do not believe me when I say that... but check the links.

I had lost 36 pounds.... and got stuck there. My wife cut off all my hair on June 10th. I brushed off the hair and ran downstairs to weigh in. Presto! 38 down!

I am not bragging about this. I hate websites where people go on and on about themselves (especially in the third person). I guess I want to share it because I am surprised that I was able to do this and it feels like it went by quickly.

The next phase will be to work out and perhaps that will slow down the rate of actual weight loss. The goal is to be healthy, not skinny. I am no longer out of breath from tying my shoes, but some additional changes are needed.

My advice to everyone trying to lose weight is this. When you first start your diet, let your hair grow. When you get discouraged a few months into your journey, cut off your hair and you can get that extra two pounds!

Seriously - if you are trying and discouraged, hang in there and ask your friends and loved ones to hold you accountable.
